Accurate and reliable sensors, and representative of the rumen environment

Dr Jose Laporte, R&D Manager for Kahne, conducted a well structured Trojan design experiment to assess the accuracy and reliability of the sensors, and compared these measurements to a known reference in the ventral sac.

Using the Kahne bolus, rumen pH and temperature were continuously monitored in the dorsal and ventral sac of four fistulated dry cows. Although there were statistical differences between sites there was a strong correlation for all parameters, suggesting that the dorsal sac is an appropriate site to monitor the dynamics of the rumen environment. Dr Laporte concluded that ‘’the Kahne bolus comprises high quality sensors that exhibit a high degree of accuracy and specificity… and if complemented with a well structured calibration procedure scientists will be rewarded with impressive and ground-breaking results’’.
